Solutions
NexGen Systems has participated in a long list of various projects since its inception in 1999. These projects have involved many organizations of various types and sizes, across a wide range of technical disciplines. From office workflow to network architecture and Internet security, we work with you to define and meet your particular IT needs.
The following are a few examples of the work we've performed for our clients.
Problem:
Client was experiencing slow responses from their server, as well as with Internet websites.
Solution:
Reviewing the server, network, and firewall logs, along with using various network utilization tools, NexGen Systems was able to identify the source of the problem as a bad network switch. Replacing the switch temporarily as a proof-of-concept proved that that root cause was indeed a failing switch. NexGen Systems assisted with the purchase of a new managed network switch, and then implemented and configured the switch for the network, resolving the issue completely.
More Info:
The foundational step in maintaining a reliable, robust IT infrastructure is to conduct a comprehensive network assessment. NexGen provides this assessment for all new clients in order to review your computer systems — from servers and laptops, to switches, routers, and firewalls, and everything in between — and document our findings and recommendations. Much like a home inspection, our network assessments give you greater awareness of your IT infrastructure’s current health and confidence in moving forward. This is the ideal starting point for planning any potential changes or for maintaining your current environment.

Problem:
Multiple servers were reaching end-of-life. Client was looking for advise and assistance with replacing their aging servers.
Solution:
NexGen engineers first reviewed the existing environment to determine the load being placed on the servers, to determine if it was possible to simply extend the life of the servers with some low-cost upgrades and extending the manufacturer maintenance contract. In this particular case neither was possible as the server contracts had already been extended and the server loads were pushing the processor limits. NexGen showed how it was more cost-effective to collapse two of the aging servers onto a single, new server, and then assisted the client with purchasing the appropriate hardware. Upon receipt of the new server, NexGen implemented the server and then migrated the old servers data and applications appropriately. The migration services were conducted off-hours over a weekend to minimize downtime for the client, and included necessary reconfigurations of various desktop applications that were identified by NexGen.
More Info:
NexGen Systems is not a reseller for any hardware vendor. As such, we are free from limiting our recommendations to any particular set of vendors and are able to offer suggestions and recommendations that will best fit the needs of our clients, regardless of vendor / manufacturer. We feel this puts us in a better position to assist clients with meeting their needs with the appropriate hardware, without limiting our recommendations due to external influences or our own bottom line.

Problem:
Multiple desktops in a client’s office were running slow and were several years old. Client needed help with upgrading all their desktops.
Solution:
NexGen first took a look at the desktops in question to determine if there were any other reasons for the slowness, such as malware or software mis-configurations. Once these items were ruled out, the hardware platform was reviewed. The desktops were in fact several years old and having difficultly keeping up with the load that business critical applications were placing on them. NexGen provided a recommendation for replacement desktops as well as what operating system to use, based on the business applications. Once purchased, NexGen configured the new desktops for the client’s network, installed and configured all necessary business applications, migrated user settings, and then replaced the old desktops. Impact to the users was very minimal, with the final replacement work being done off-hours to avoid work-day disruption.

Problem:
Client was alerted by their bank that a significant ACH transfer had occurred. Client had no knowledge of this transfer and retained NexGen’s help with identifying a potential malware problem on their network.
Solution:
NexGen began investigating immediately and within minutes identified that the virus QAKBOT (part of a multi-component malware geared towards stealing financial data) was prevalent on the network. Further analysis indicated a major compromise with the presence of rootkits, along with 2nd and 3rd phase compromises. NexGen took immediate action, with the client’s full knowledge and consent, to quarantine their network from the Internet to prevent further attacks and losses. NexGen then reached out for a peer review of the situation with another security firm. With this “second opinion” in agreement with NexGen’s own analysis, NexGen led a discussion about the situation and the possible eradication options with the business owners and the 3rd party security firm in attendance. The option selected by the business owners and unanimously agreed to by all parties was to wipe and rebuild all impacted workstations and servers, implement additional security controls (including anti-malware and intrusion prevention and detection systems), and restore all data from the last known-good backup. NexGen worked through the night and into the next day (34 hours straight) to fully rebuild the client’s workstations and servers, restore their data, and finally verify the integrity of their network and data.
More Info:
NexGen has a solid reputation and strong relationships within the IT and Information Security community in Central Ohio. When necessary and appropriate, NexGen can bring additional resources to a critical situation and help the client manage evolving situations such as this.

Problem:
Client’s aging tape backup could no longer support the ever growing data within their company, and they needed a new solution to protect their critical business data.
Solution:
NexGen reviewed the client’s current backup solution and their data backup needs, then offered suggestions on various backup options and alternatives to help narrow the client’s needs. In this particular scenario the business ran out of two offices with servers located in each office and connected by a high-speed point-to-point link. This allowed a solution to be developed that would use low-cost disk space on the servers for backup storage and a robust backup application to replicate data on a nightly basis. With data de-duplication as part of the backup application, this primary backup provided full data backup each night with a very fast data recovery time. In addition, to provide long-term off-site data protection, a cloud-based solution was also implemented. After the initial data load, the cloud-based solution then provided multiple years worth of backups for data that is changed not just on a nightly basis, but every 30 minutes, allowing for data recovery even for changes or deletions that occur within the same day. All data protection was fully tested and continues to be tested on a monthly basis to ensure ongoing effectiveness.
